Agents For Change

Mission Statement

Peacemakers’ Alliance exists to increase the human agency, literacy, and nonviolent conflict resolution skills of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons. Our experiential learning opportunities are designed to instill hope and healing in the lives of those we serve. United for peace and justice for all, we seek to build community, inspire growth, and empower others to step into life during and after incarceration as agents for peaceful change.

Our History

Peacemakers’ Alliance started in 2009 as a correspondence course for San Mateo County (SMCO) Jail prisoners. Since that time, we have expanded to offer in-custody literacy and community building programming to incarcerated participants in SMCO’s jails and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. We also offer post-release services to formerly incarcerated persons, serving an average of 400 participants per year and their families.

In 2021, we piloted programming with reentry populations receiving addiction treatment, as well collaborating with SMCO Correctional Health Services to support the development of substance use treatment programming rooted in critical literacy and social-emotional learning. We continue to grow and support systems-impacted participants and their families.
